Daily Holy Slokas

Early Morning is considered as the best time to worship God. Early morning is also known as
"Brahma Mahurat" in the Hindu Mythology. It is regarded that prayers made at this time reach
directly to the God. Early Morning Shloka (Sloka) is given here which also serves as the first
prayer of the day to the almighty.

Karaagre Vasathe Lakshmi Karamadhye Saraswathi,
Karamoole Thu Govinda Prabhaathe Karadarshanam,
Samudravasane Devi Parvathasthana mandale,
Vishhnupathni Namastubhyam Paadhasparsham Kshamasva Mey

Meaning:
The front part of the hands (the finger tips) is credited to Goddess Lakshmi, the
Goddess of wealth. The middle part or palm is credited to Goddess Saraswati, the Goddess of
learning and the root (the part of hand near the wrist) to Govinda. So, every morning, one
should have a reverent look at one's hand which represents sincere labor.
I bow to Mother Earth, who has mountains and jungles on her body and whose clothing is
made by the ocean. The wife of Lord Vishnu, please pardon me for touching you with my feet.
It is considered propitious to start the day with this sincere prayer.

Sloka While Eating
Eating is an important activity, which is required in order to live. It is God, who has created
each and every thing. Food, hunger, living beings, all of them form the part of God's creation.
One should remember God, the omnipresent, who has given both, sweet and sour delicacies to
satisfy our taste-buds. Following is the Sloka/ Shloka which can be recited while eating or taking
your food.
"Brahmaarpanam Brahma Havih Brahmaagnau Brahmana Hutam,
Brahmaiva Tena Gantavyam Brahmakarmasamaadhina"
Meaning:
The accurate meaning of this mantra is: "A practice of offering is Brahman, the
oblation is Brahman, the device of offering is Brahman, and the fire (hunger) to which the
offering is made, is also Brahman. For such a one, who abides in everything (Brahman), by him
alone Brahman is reached".
Significance
: Brahman refers to God himself. This Shloka suggests that god is everywhere, in
the food, inside the devotee and even the hunger is God. So, devotee is taking the food (God)
to the hunger (God). To put succinctly, we always thank god for his divine grace.

DAILY HOLY SLOKAS 15.04.13 TO 21.04.13

Saptami fast is observed on seventh date of Shukla Paksha of every month. This fast is specially for, conceiving a child, safety of child, and growth of child. Although, every month’s fast on Shukl Paksha is significant, but, fast of Saptami on Bhadrpad’s(sixth month of Hindu calender) Shukl Paksha has its own special significance.

Santan Saptami Vrata ( Fast) Procedure

The fast of Saptami is observed by mothers for their children. Mother observing this fast should take bath early in the morning and complete her routine work and wear clean clothes. After this, in the morning, she should worship Lord Vishnu and Shiva. And, should take the resolution of Saptami fast.
Keeping the Nirahar Vrat, in the afternoon, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati should be worshiped with Chauk Purkar Sandalwood, Akshat(rice used in worship), incense, small lamp, Prashad, betel nut and coconut etc.
In Saptami Tithi fast, Kheer, Puri and Pua of jaggery are prepared as Prasadam. Wishing for child’s safety, Lord Shiva is offered a red color thread. After offering it to God Shiva, the thread is worn and story related to fast is heard. The story of Saptami Tithi is as follows.

Story (Katha) of Saptami Vrata

An ancient legend is famous regarding the Saptami fast. As per this narration, once Lord Krishna told Yuddhistra “at some time, Lomash Rishi came to Mathura. My parents Devika and Vasudev, served him devotedly, then the Rishi ordered them to get over the grief of their sons, killed by Kansa”. Rishi said “Hey Devika!
Kansa killed many of your sons and gave you the sorrow of sons’ death. To be free from this pain, keep the fast of ‘Santan(child) Saptami’. King Nahusha’s queen, Chandramukhi, also kept this fast. Then, Chandramukhi’s children also did not die. Devika, this fast will also make you come out of the grief of sons’ death.”
Devika said, “O God! Please tell me the methods of observing this fast. So that I could complete it in a systematic way.” Lomash Rishi, explained her the procedure of worshiping and also narrated the story of fast.
Nahusha was a glorious king of Ayodhya. His wife’s name was Chandramukhi. In his kingdom, there lived a Brahman, named Vishnudat. His wife was Rupwati. Queen Chandramukhi and Rupwati had a good friendship. One day both of them went to take bath in river Sarayu. Other women were also having a bath at that place. The ladies, had made an idol of Shiva and Parvati there and worshiped them in a systematic way. Then, queen Chandrmukhi and Rupwati asked those ladies, the procedure and name of the Puja.
One of those ladies said “we worshiped Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. We tied a thread to Lord Shiva with a resolution that, we will observing this fast up till the time we are alive. This ‘Muktabhran Fast’ is the giver of happiness and child.”
After listening to the theme behind the fast, both the friends took the resolution of observing this fast for their lifetime and, tied a thread in name of God Shiva. But, after reaching home, they forgot the pledge. As a result, after death, queen was born as female monkey and Brahmani as a chicken.
Over the time, both of them left the animal form and were born as humans. Chandramukhi, became the queen of king Prithvinath, and, Rupwati was again born in a Brahman’s house. In this birth, queen’s name was Eshwari and Brahmani’s name was Bhushna. Bhushan was married to Rajpuohit(oldest Hindu Brahman), Agnimukhi. In this life also both the ladies had a very good friendship.
Because of forgetting about the fast, queen was deprived from the happiness of getting a child, in this life also. In mature state, she gave birth to a deaf and dumb son. But, he also died on becoming nine years old. Bhushna remembered about the Vrat, and gave birth to good looking and healthy eight sons.
As a gesture of sympathy, Bhusna went to meet queen Eshwari, who was in the grief of not getting son. Looking at Bhusna, envy grew in the mind of queen. After Bhusna’s departure, queen called her sons for a meal and added poison in their food. But, as a result of fast kept by Bhusna, nothing happened to her children.
By this, queen got more angry. She ordered her servants, to take Bhusna’s children at the bank of Yammuna with an excuse of Puja and through them in deep water. But, this time also, by the blessings of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, sons of Bhusana had no effect.
As a result, queen called executioners and ordered them to kill the Brahman sons at the slaughter place. But, they also got failed in their attempts. Listening this news, queen got surprised. She called Bhusna, narrated the whole story and asked for forgiveness. Then, she asked why weren’t her children dieing.
Bhusna said “don’t you remember the incident of past birth?” Queen got surprised and said “no I don’t remember.”
Then Bhusna said “listen, in our past birth, you were the wife of king Nahusha and i was your friend. Once, both of us had tied a thread in name of Lord Shiva and took a resolution that in whole of our life we will observe the fast of Saptami. But, unfortunately we forgot and neglected the fast. As a result, we took birth in different forms and then we were born as human. Now, I remembered about the Vrat, and so, started observing it. By its effect only, you could get by children killed.”
Hearing this, queen Eshwari also observed this fast, Muktabhran, in a systematic way to get a child. Then, by the grace of this Vrat, queen again became pregnant and gave birth to a beautiful child. From that time, for conceiving a child and his safety, this fast got popularity.

Ashokastami Festival 2013 at Lingaraj Temple Orissa

Ashokastami Festival or Ashok Ashtami Festival is one of the important Indian Hindu Festivals associated with Lord Shiva and Goddess Shakti, celebrated especially in Orissa, India. Ashokashtami is also the important annual car festival celebrated at the Lord Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar, Orissa. Ashoka Ashtami falls on the eighth day of the Chaitra month (Chaitra Shukla Astami), (March – April). This year, Ashok Ashtami Festival is on April 2013.

Significance of Ashok Ashtami Festival

According to the Hindu Puranas, Lord Ram was not able to kill Ravana even after the heavy battle. At that time, Vibhishana (Bibhishan), the younger brother of the demon Ravana, advised Lord Rama to pray and help the blessings of Goddess Shakti. Lord Ram performed pujas and prayed the Goddess Shakti & Lord Shiva at the Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar for seven long days and got Goddess blessings on the eighth day (Ashtami). With the blessings of Goddess Shakti and Lord Shiv, Lord Ram easily demolished Ravan with the Brahmastra, the weapon created by Lord Brahma. To celebrate the victory, Lord Ramachandra took out a procession of Shiva and Shakti in a chariot on the Ashtami day. Ashoka Ashtami festival was celebrated from that day to mark the victory of Lord Rama, or the victory of Good over evil.

The word “Ashoka” literally means “free from any shoka (sorrow)” and the word “Astami” means “eighth day”. Hence Ashoka Astami is the day when Goddess Shakti and Lord Shiva relived the sorrows of Lord Rama.

Ashok Ashtami Festival Ratha Yatra

The Ratha Jatra (Car Festival) celebrated at the Lord Lingaraj Temple, in Bhubaneswar on Ashok Ashtami Festival attracts thousands of devotees from Orissa and the neighbouring states.

Ashok Ashtami Fair

Every year on Ashokashtami, Ashok Ashtami Fair is conducted at Unakoti Tirtha of Kailashahar Sub-Division, in Tripura which attracts lots of pilgrims from all over the state. During the fair special pujas are performed to the Gods and Goddesses images engraved on the hilly rocks.

The untold glories of Kamada Ekadasi are described in the Varaha Purana in a delightful conversation between Maharaj Yudhistira and Sri Krsna.
The king asked: "My dear Lord, crowning jewel of the yadu dynasty. Please enlighten me about the nature of this most auspicious day Kamada Ekadasi. Please advise me how one should observe this Ekadasi that falls during the month of Chaitra while the moon is waxing. Please also describe what the benefits of such observance are and advise me how to reap the result."
"Sri Krsna replied: "My dear maharaja Yudhisthira, please hear attentively the description of this Ekadasi day which has been recorded in the ancient Purana. One time Maharaja Dilip, the great grandfather of Sri Ramacandra, asked his dearly beloved and most magnanimous spiritual master Vasistha, about the name and procedure for observing this Ekadasi, 'Kamada' which occurs during the month of Chaitra (March/April.)
"The saintly & sagacious Vasistha replied, 'O my dear King, naturally i will fulfill your desire to hear the glories of this Ekadasi day. The name of this inscrutably alligned, constellatory opportunity is Kamada. The essence of such a day is the realisation of the delineation of lust and love; and knowing the difference between the two. This sacred Ekadasi burns all one's sinful reactions to ashes and awards the observer the privelege of having an intelligent and confident son. Now, please hear the glories of this Ekadasi."
"Once, in the city of Ratnapura (Bhogipura) there was a great and venerable king known by the name of Pundarika. He was accompanied by his joyful and kindly munificent subjects which included the Gandharvas, Kinnaras and the Apsaras. In that sweetly opulent city there lived a fantastically beautiful Apsara named Lalita and a handsome, regal Gandharva known as Lalit. They lived happily as husband and wife and were consistently overwhelmed by each other's love; to the point of madhness. They were constantly engaged in sporting activities and relished each others company until their association burned at the heartstrings and knarled their brains to the point of exhaustion."
"One time in the court of King Pundarika many Gandharva's were engaged in blissful frivolities,  they were singing and dancing and covorting in great bliss. Lalit sang with the Gandharvas although his wife did not, rather she danced in great ecstacy with the many joyous Apsaras. Due to the pangs of separation that Lalit was experiencing in separation from his devoted wife, he felt intense hankering and dove into an ocean of tears. His innunciation during his singing grew weaker and he forgot the words to many songs that he knew off by heart."
"Oh king, in that assembly there was one serpent from the Patala Region, he went by the name of Karkotaka and knew well the mystery of this situation. He complained in a greatly thunderous voice, "O lalit you have spoiled the perfomance here by your attachment to your wife, you have upset the taal (rhythm) of the piece and distracted the singers. Therefore i curse you to be a man-eater cannibal.'
"Being thus cursed by such a serpentine character, Lalit immediately transformed into a great demon and all could see there was fearsome fire in his eyes. When lalita saw her husband's terrifying form she was extremely hurt and distressed. In intense pain and distress she spent her days and nights simply thinking of where to go, what to do and who to see. However, her fears allayed she felt no understanding of where she was, what she was doing and who she was seeing. She was simply lost on an ocean of delinquent separation. Surrendering all embarrassment she lived with her husband in the forest."
"Once, while wandering within the dense forest with her husband, Lalita saw the most sacred ashrama of the sage and Sringi situated at the peak of the Vindhiya Mountain. Lalita immediately went there and offered her respectful obeisances to the sage. Upon seeing this lady, the sage inquired, 'O beautiful one, who are you and where do you come from? Why have you come here and what duty will you perform here?'
"Lalita replied: "O great soul, I am the daughter of the great and kind hearted Gandharva named Viradhanva. My name is Lalita and I live in this forest with my husband. He has been cursed by a ferocious serpent and is now in the form of a demon. O brahmana! I am greatly indebted to you for your kind darshan and have no means of rescuing my husband myself. Please, as a great brahmana you must surely have the ability to help. If there is at all some way of atonement that will remove this horrendous afflication, then please; tell me!"
"After hearing Lalita's pathetic request, the sage Sringi said, 'O daughter of the Gandharva, in a few days time during the waxing Moon of the Chaitra month. There is a munificent Ekadasi day, known as Kamada. By observance of this day all one's sinful reactions can be completely annhiliated. By following this (vow) and giving the entire merit to your husband, all one's desire's will be fulfilled. Then, by the influence of this merit your husband will immediately become freed from the curse."
"O King! Being instructed in this way by the sage, Lalita gladly observed the vow of this Ekadasi. On the day of Dvadasi, Lalita gladly sat in front of the brahmanas and the Supreme Lord Vasudeva and announced: "I have observed the Ekadasi vrata as you reccomended, I have abstained from food and water for the duration and am now gladly offering my results unto my dearest husband. I pray that my piety will remove his demoniac condition and alleviate our suffering."
"As soon as Lalita had finished her prayer, her husband-turned-demon, 'Lalit' became freed from the reactions of his sins and regained his divine Gandharva form. From that time on Lalit and Lalita lived happily together."
"Lord Krsna concluded, "O Maharaja Yudhisthira! O best of kings! Anyone who hears the narration of this most charmingly blissful day should certainly observe it to the best of his ability. There is no better vow as it can eradicate even the sin of killing a brahmana and easily counteracts demoniac curses."
